7/11/16: Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth MA

Next up in our trip to Cape Cod, MA is the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth.  This museum just opened in West Yarmouth and was cool to visit.  This really interesting museum even has real pirate treasure!  In fact it displays the world's only authenticated pirate treasure which was discovered in 1984 off the coast of Wellfleet.
The Whydah ship was built by the British to travel between Africa, the Caribbean and Great Britain. During one of its voyages in 1717, it was captured by the famed pirate Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy. Over the following year, the Whydah and its crew pirated 53 vessels, collecting their riches and treasures.  That is the actual bell from the ship in water.
I was impressed by this recreation of the ship which sunk in 1717.  There are so many artifacts and recreations through the whole museum to allow children to learn about the ship.
The Whydah’s treasure laid just 500 feet off the shore for over 250 years.
After dedicating years to its discovery, the Whydah’s real pirate treasure was unearthed by Provincetown resident, Barry Clifford and for the first time ever is on display for you to see!  We were able to touch pieces of the treasure also.
It is a great learning experience for children to read about the history of this ship.
There are lots of recreations.
Here is a model of the boat itself.
There are also some pieces of artifacts from the boat in concretions.
This laboratory area has artifacts embedded in concretions and archaeologists remove these pieces.
I highly suggest visiting them!

Disclosure:  I was provided with two tickets to the Whydah Museum for review purposes.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.
